Add contrast with curves

Stormy images often don’t look as punchy or as rich as we want them too straight out of the camera, so they’ll probably need a bit of work in Photoshop to finish them off. Unfortunately, this technique does not work in Photoshop Elements but can be applied with any RAW converter package which boasts Curves adjustments.

Bring up the Curves dialogue box by going to Image>Adjustments>Curves or by hitting Ctrl+M on the keyboard. First try darkening your image down to bring out the colours and enhance the atmosphere. To do this simply click in the middle of the diagonal line and drag it down a little way. If you need more contrast in your image try clicking and dragging on the line towards the top, and moving it upwards to create an ‘S’ curve. If you want more contrast and a darker image make sure the curve bends right down on the left-hand side like the curve shown on the right. When your happy with how your image looks, click OK to apply.
